The Silence of Nature – How Being Outdoors Shapes My Images and Ceramics

Natuurfotografie in Maastricht | Puurheid en Spontaniteit in Beeld

There is something special about nature. The silence, the soft light filtering through the leaves, the simplicity of a flower in the wind – it’s those small, often unnoticed moments that move me. Being outdoors helps me slow down, look, and truly see. This way of seeing is something I carry with me in everything I create, whether it’s a photo session or a piece of pottery from my kiln.

As a photographer in Maastricht, I am fortunate to live near the beautiful Sint Pietersberg, surrounded by breathtaking nature. This inspires me daily. It’s here, in the peace of the forests and the openness of the fields, where I can take the time to truly see and feel. Nature helps enrich my work as a photographer, teaching me the value of capturing those small, pure moments.

In my photography, I prefer to work with natural light because it captures the authenticity and atmosphere of the moment. It's often the spontaneous, unposed moments that are the most beautiful. When I direct my camera towards these moments, something genuine and pure always emerges—something I want to hold onto forever. That sense of honesty and timelessness is something I also bring into my work as a ceramist.

Whether I’m venturing into nature with my camera or shaping clay at my workbench, the process is always the same: I observe, feel, and create with nature as my greatest source of inspiration. In both my photography and ceramics, I always strive to create something pure, something that reflects the beauty of the moment.
